Skin becomes thinner as a person ages, or as a result of sun damage, medication, or lifestyle factors. It is not usually reversible, but there are some ways to protect skin and prevent complications.

Thin skin on the hands is relatively common. However, as a person ages, they may also develop thin, papery skin on their arms and legs. Thin skin bruises more easily.

In this article, we look at the causes of thin skin, possible treatments and preventions, and when to see a doctor.

What is thin skin?

Skin is naturally thinner on some parts of the body. The skin on the eyelids is only 0.5 millimeters (mm) thick, while the skin on the heels can be up to 4 mm thick.

The skin is made up of three layers, each with a different role:

  • The hypodermis is the innermost layer, made up of tissue, fat, and sweat glands.
  • The dermis is the next layer, which contains the nerves and blood supply.
  • The epidermis is the outermost layer of skin, which is a barrier against dirt and bacteria.
  • Thin skin means that the epidermis is not as thick as it should be. The hypodermis may also have less fat, which results in this layer being thinner, too.
  • By itself, thinner skin should not cause any medical problems. However, a person may find that their skin gets damaged or bruises more easily.

Symptoms of thin skin

If a person has thin skin, it can look more transparent and they might be able to see veins, bones, or tendons more clearly.

Thin skin can be easily damaged. A person may notice that their skin bruises or tears after minor injuries.

A loss of fat from the hypodermis causes the skin to look less plump or full, which can make the skin appear thinner.

Causes

Aging is the most common cause of thin skin. Thin skin is a natural part of getting older, alongside furrows and wrinkles, less skin elasticity, and skin that is dry or easily damaged.

Sunlight plays a significant role in thinning the skin over time. UVA and UVB rays can kill or damage skin cells.

Smoking and drinking alcohol both speed up skin aging and can contribute to thinning of the skin over time.

Steroid creams can make the cells in the epidermis smaller. The medication may also affect the tissue connecting skin cells. This can leave the skin looking wrinkled or loose.

Other medications may cause thinning of the skin as a side effect. This may happen with topical steroids, which people apply directly to their skin. This medication is usually in the form of a cream or ointment and is used to treat skin conditions, such as eczema.

Treatment

It is not possible to reverse thinning of the skin. However, moisturizing the skin can make it more flexible and less likely to break.

Anything that makes the skin red or sore is likely to be damaging it. A person with thin skin might need to protect it from damage. For example, they should avoid contact with harsh chemicals.

A person with thin skin may find their skin bruises or damages more easily. Protecting the skin by wearing long sleeves, and long skirts or trousers can help.

Using creams that contain vitamin A, also known as retinol or retinoids, may help to prevent skin from thinning further. Retinol creams are available in drugstores or online as cosmetic products.

Research published in 2018 suggests that in some cases retinol may help to normalize skin thickness. However, it should be used with care and is not suitable for all skin types.

While there is no conclusive evidence that using collagen boosters improves skin health or thickens the skin, some people find them beneficial.

Eating a balanced diet can help support overall health. Include plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and proteins.

Vitamin E, found in foods such as almonds and avocados, can also support skin health. The fats in these foods may help to keep the skin supple.

Drinking enough water helps to keep the skin hydrated. Dry skin can be irritated or damaged more easily and is often less flexible.

Prevention

It is not possible to avoid all signs of aging. Fine lines or wrinkles, and skin that becomes thinner and drier occur naturally as a person ages. However, it might be possible to lessen or slow down some of the visible signs of aging.

It might be possible to prevent some age-related thinning of the skin by protecting the skin from harmful UV rays, moisturizing skin regularly, and not smoking.

UV light from the sun is one of the major causes of skin aging. Protect the skin from the sun by:

  • wearing factor SPF 30 sunscreen or higher that protects from both UVA and UVB rays
  • sitting in the shade or spending time indoors during the hottest part of the day
  • wearing long sleeves, and a long skirt or trousers
  • choosing a hat that will shade the neck and face

Moisturizing the skin can help to prevent dryness and damage. This is because it stops water from leaving the skin. Hydrated skin is more elastic and healthier.

Alcohol also dries out the skin, so avoid drinking to excess. Drinking a glass of water in between alcoholic drinks can help a person to stay hydrated.

The primary function of the skin is to act as a barrier. The skin provides protection from: mechanical impacts and pressure, variations in temperature, micro-organisms, radiation and chemicals.

The skin is an organ of regulation

The skin regulates several aspects of physiology, including: body temperature via sweat and hair, and changes in peripheral circulation and fluid balance via sweat. It also acts as a reservoir for the synthesis of Vitamin D.

The skin is an organ of sensation

The skin contains an extensive network of nerve cells that detect and relay changes in the environment. There are separate receptors for heat, cold, touch, and pain. Damage to these nerve cells is known as neuropathy, which results in a loss of sensation in the affected areas. Patients with neuropathy may not feel pain when they suffer injury, increasing the risk of severe wounding or the worsening of an existing wound.

What is the purpose of skin?

 How does skin work?

Even at its thickest point, our skin is only a few millimeters thick. But it is still our heaviest and largest organ, making up about one seventh of our body weight: Depending on your height and body mass, it weighs between 3.5 and 10 kilograms (7.5 and 22 pounds) and has a surface area of 1.5 to 2 square meters. This goes to show how important skin is for your body and metabolism.

What does skin do?

Skin has a lot of different functions. It is a stable but flexible outer covering that acts as barrier, protecting your body from harmful things in the outside world such as moisture, the cold and sun rays, as well as germs and toxic substances.

Just looking at someone’s skin can already tell you a lot – for instance, about their age and health. Changes in skin color or structure can be a sign of a medical condition. For example, people with too few red blood cells in their blood may look pale, and people who have hepatitis have yellowish skin.

Skin also plays an important role in regulating your body temperature. It helps prevent dehydration and protects you from the negative effects of too much heat or cold. And it allows your body to feel sensations such as warmth, cold, pressure, itching and pain. Some of these sensations trigger a reflex, like automatically pulling your hand back if you accidentally touch a hot stove.

Skin also functions as a large storeroom for the body: The deepest layer of skin can store water, fat and metabolic products. And it produces hormones that are important for the whole body.

If skin is injured, the blood supply to the skin increases in order to deliver various substances to the wound so it is better protected from infections and can heal faster. Later on, new cells are produced to form new skin and blood vessels. Depending on how deep the wound is, it heals with or without a scar.

To be able to do all of these things, skin consists of three different layers: the outer layer (epidermis), the middle layer (dermis) and the deepest layer (subcutis). Depending on where it is on your body and the demands made on it, your skin varies in thickness. The thickness of your skin depends on your age and sex too: Older people generally have thinner skin than younger people do, and men generally have thicker skin than women do.

The outer layer (epidermis)

The outermost layer of skin which you can see is called the epidermis. It is mostly made up of cells that produce keratin (keratinocytes). These cells are gradually pushed to the surface of the skin by newer cells, where they harden and then eventually die off. The hardened keratinocytes (corneocytes) are packed closely together and seal the skin off from the outside environment.

The epidermis constantly renews itself: New cells are made in the lower layers of the epidermis. These move to the surface within four weeks. This constant renewal serves to replace the cells that are lost and fall to the ground as tiny flakes of skin when the skin is rubbed. The cells in the epidermis grow faster in response to pressure or rubbing. The amount of skin flakes that are shed remains the same, though. As a result, the layer of hardened skin on the surface gradually becomes thicker and a callus develops. The skin does this to protect itself – to better withstand pressure and rubbing.

Only rarely is the balance of new cell production and old cell shedding affected by illness. Examples include infections, autoimmune disorders or genetic diseases that cause increased growth of rough, scaly skin on the entire body. Hardened skin in only one place may be a sign of non-melanoma skin cancer or skin changes that may develop into cancer.

Depending on where it is on the body, the epidermis varies in thickness. For instance, it is only 0.3 millimeters thick on your elbows and the back of your knees, and up to 4 millimeters thick on other parts of your body such as the soles of your feet and palms of your hands.


The epidermis also contains other types of cells with special functions:

  • Melanocytes produce and store a black pigment called melanin. They produce more melanin when your skin is exposed to sunlight, which is why it becomes darker. This protects the skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
  • Lymphocytes and Langerhans cells play an important role in fighting germs. They “grab” the germs and take them to the nearest lymph node.
  • Merkel cells are special nerve cells in the skin that enable you to sense pressure.

The middle layer (dermis)

Under the epidermis, firmly stuck to it, lies the middle layer of skin (the dermis). It is made up of a dense network of tough, elastic collagen fibers. These make the skin strong and robust, while at the same time stretchy. If skin is stretched a lot – for instance the skin covering a pregnant woman’s belly – the dermis might tear. The torn dermis can be seen as light lines (stretch marks).

In places, the dermis bulges into the connective tissue that surrounds our muscles and bones and connects them with the skin.

The dermis contains a network of nerve fibers and very small blood vessels called capillaries. Nutrients and oxygen in the blood pass from the capillaries into cells. The other main function of the capillaries is to help your body cool down if it gets too hot. The dermis is also the skin layer that contains the most sensory (feeling) cells and sweat glands.

The deepest layer (subcutis)

The subcutis (also known as the subcutaneous layer or hypodermis) is mostly made up of fat and connective tissue. In the subcutis, between the folds of dermis that bulge into it, there are tiny cavities. These cavities are filled with storage tissue made out of fat and water. The fat acts as a shock absorber, protecting bones and joints from blows or bumps. It serves as insulation too. What’s more, many hormones are produced in the fat cells of the subcutis. One example is vitamin D, which is an essential vitamin and is made when the skin is exposed to sunlight.

The subcutis and dermis both contain blood vessels and lymph vessels too, as well as other things like nerves, sweat glands, sebaceous (oil) glands, scent glands and hair roots.

What is the skin?

 Anatomy of the Skin

The skin is a vital organ that covers the entire outside of the body, forming a protective barrier against pathogens and injuries from the environment. The skin is the body's largest organ; covering the entire outside of the body, it is about 2 mm thick and weighs approximately six pounds. It shields the body against heat, light, injury, and infection. The skin also helps regulate body temperature, gathers sensory information from the environment, stores water, fat, and vitamin D, and plays a role in the immune system protecting us from disease.

The color, thickness and texture of skin vary over the body. There are two general types of skin; thin and hairy, which is more prevalent on the body, and thick and hairless, which is found on parts of the body that are used heavily and endure a large amount of friction, like the palms of the hands or the soles of the feet.

Basically, the skin is comprised of two layers that cover a third fatty layer. These three layers differ in function, thickness, and strength. The outer layer is called the epidermis; it is a tough protective layer that contains the melanin-producing melanocytes. The second layer (located under the epidermis) is called the dermis; it contains nerve endings, sweat glands, oil glands, and hair follicles. Under these two skin layers is a fatty layer of subcutaneous tissue, known as the subcutis or hypodermis. The skin contains many specialized cells and structures:

Basket Cells

Basket cells surround the base of hair follicles and can sense pressure. They are evaluated when assessing overall nerve health and condition.

Blood Vessels

Blood vessels carry nutrients and oxygen-rich blood to the cells that make up the layers of skin and carry away waste products.

Hair Erector Muscle (Arrector Pili Muscle)

The arrector pili muscle is a tiny muscle connected to each hair follicle and the skin. When it contracts it causes the hair to stand erect, and a "goosebump" forms on the skin.

Hair Follicle

The hair follicle is a tube-shaped sheath that surrounds the part of the hair that is under the skin and nourishes the hair. It is located in the epidermis and the dermis.

Hair Shaft

The hair shaft is the part of the hair that is above the skin.

Langerhans Cells

These cells attach themselves to antigens that invade damaged skin and alert the immune system to their presence.

Melanocyte

A melanocyte is a cell that produces melanin, and is located in the basal layer of the epidermis.

Merkel Cells

Merkel cells are tactile cells of neuroectodermal origin located in the basal layer of the epidermis.

Pacinian Corpuscle

A pacinian corpuscle is a nerve receptor located in the subcutaneous fatty tissue that responds to pressure and vibration.

Sebaceous Gland

Sebaceous glands are small, sack-shaped glands which release an oily substance onto the hair follicle that coats and protects the hair shaft from becoming brittle. These glands are located in the dermis.

Sensory Nerves

The epidermis is innervated with sensory nerves. These nerves sense and transmit heat, pain, and other noxious sensations. When they are not functioning properly sensations such as numbness, pins-and-needles, pain, tingling, or burning may be felt. When evaluating a skin biopsy, total number, contiguity, diameter, branching, swelling, and overall health of the sensory nerves are assessed.

Stratum Corneum

The stratum corneum is outermost layer of the epidermis, and is comprised of dead skin cells. It protects the living cells beneath it by providing a tough barrier between the environment and the lower layers of the skin. The stratum corneum is useful for diagnosis because in some conditions it will become thinner than normal.

Sweat Gland (Sudoriferous Gland)

These glands are located in the epidermis and produce moisture (sweat) that is secreted through tiny ducts onto the surface of the skin (stratum corneum). When sweat evaporates, skin temperature is lowered.

After the lungs have had exposure to pollution, such as cigarette smoke, a person’s chest may feel full, congested, or inflamed. Mucus gathers in the lungs to catch microbes and pathogens, which contributes to this feeling of heaviness.

People may be able to use specific techniques to help clear the lungs of mucus and irritants to relieve chest congestion and other uncomfortable symptoms.

Some of these methods may also open up the airways, improve lung capacity, and reduce inflammation, which can help reduce the effects of pollution and smoke in the lungs.

Ways to clear the lungs

1. Steam therapy

Steam therapy, or steam inhalation, involves inhaling water vapor to open the airways and help the lungs drain mucus.

People with lung conditions may notice their symptoms worsening in cold or dry air. This climate can dry out the mucous membranes in the airways and restrict blood flow.

Conversely, steam adds warmth and moisture to the air, which may improve breathing and help loosen mucus inside the airways and lungs. Inhaling water vapor can provide immediate relief and help people breathe more easily.

A small study involving 16 males with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a lung condition that makes it harder to breathe, found that steam mask therapy led to significantly lower heart rates and respiratory rates than non-steam mask therapy.

However, the participants did not report lasting improvements in their respiratory function.

This therapy may be an effective temporary solution, but researchers need to do more research before they fully understand the benefits of steam therapy on lung health

2. Controlled coughing

Coughing is the body’s way of naturally expelling toxins that it has trapped in mucus. Controlled coughing loosens excess mucus in the lungs, sending it up through the airways.

Doctors recommend that people with COPD perform this exercise to help clear their lungs.

People can follow the steps below to cleanse their lungs of excess mucus:

  • sit down on a chair with the shoulders relaxed, keeping both feet flat on the floor
  • fold the arms over the stomach
  • slowly inhale through the nose
  • slowly exhale while leaning forward, pushing the arms against the stomach
  • cough 2 or 3 times while exhaling, keeping the mouth slightly open
  • slowly inhale through the nose
  • rest and repeat as necessary

3. Drain mucus from the lungs

Postural drainage involves lying in different positions to use gravity to remove mucus from the lungs. This practice may improve breathing and help treat or prevent lung infections.

Postural drainage techniques differ depending on the position:

1. On your back

Lie down on the floor or a bed.

Place pillows under the hips to ensure that the chest is lower than the hips.

Slowly inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth. Each exhale should take twice as long as the inhale, which is called 1:2 breathing.

Continue for a few minutes.

2. On your side

Lie on one side, resting the head on an arm or pillow.

Place pillows under the hips.

Practice the 1:2 breathing pattern.

Continue for a few minutes.

Repeat on the other side.

3. On your stomach

Place a stack of pillows on the floor.

Lie down with the stomach over the pillows. Remember to keep the hips above the chest.

Fold the arms under the head for support.

Practice the 1:2 breathing pattern.

Continue for a few minutes.

4. Exercise

Regular exercise can improve people’s physical and mental health, and it decreases the risk of many health conditions, including stroke and heart disease.

Exercise forces the muscles to work harder, which increases the body’s breathing rate, resulting in a greater supply of oxygen to the muscles. It also improves circulation, making the body more efficient in removing the excess carbon dioxide that the body produces when exercising.

The body will start to adapt to meet the demands of regular exercise. The muscles will learn to use oxygen more efficiently and produce less carbon dioxide.

Although exercising may be more difficult for people with chronic lung conditions, these individuals can also benefit from regular exercise. People who have COPD, cystic fibrosis, or asthma should consult a healthcare professional before starting a new exercise regimen.

5. Green tea

Green tea contains many antioxidants that may help reduce inflammation in the lungs. These compounds may even protect lung tissue from the harmful effects of smoke inhalation.

A recent study involving more than 1,000 adults in Korea reported that people who drank at least 2 cups of green tea per day had better lung function than those who drank none.

6. Anti-inflammatory foods


Inflammation of the airways can make breathing difficult and cause the chest to feel heavy and congested. Eating anti-inflammatory foods can reduce inflammation to relieve these symptoms.

Foods that help fight inflammation include:

  • turmeric
  • leafy greens
  • cherries
  • blueberries
  • olives
  • walnuts
  • beans
  • lentils

7. Chest percussion

Percussion is another effective way to remove excess mucus from the lungs. A healthcare professional or respiratory therapist will use a cupped hand to rhythmically tap the chest wall to dislodge trapped mucus in the lungs.

Combining chest percussion and postural drainage can help clear the airways of excess mucus.
